Keep your LPA effective, understood and ready to use when it matters
Making a Lasting Power of Attorney is an important step. But once the document has been signed and registered, it should not simply be placed in a drawer and forgotten.
People move house. Attorneys change jobs, become unwell, fall out with family members, move abroad, lose confidence, or simply do not understand what they are expected to do. Banks, care homes, hospitals and local authorities may ask difficult questions when the LPA is first used. Families may disagree about whether the donor still has capacity, whether the attorney is acting properly, or whether safeguarding concerns have arisen.
Our LPA Aftercare Service is designed to help keep your arrangements practical, current and safe.
It gives you and your attorneys continuing support after the LPA has been made, helping to reduce risk, promote safeguarding, and make sure the people you have chosen understand their duties before a crisis occurs.
Why LPA aftercare matters
An LPA is not just a legal document. It is a protective arrangement.
A well-prepared LPA can still run into problems if:
- attorneys are unsure when they can act;
- banks or care providers refuse to accept documents;
- family members disagree about decisions;
- the donor’s wishes have changed;
- contact details are out of date;
- replacement attorneys are no longer suitable;
- the donor loses capacity before practical planning has been done;
- attorneys do not understand the Mental Capacity Act principles;
- safeguarding concerns arise around money, care, pressure or influence.
Aftercare helps reduce these risks by keeping the LPA under review and giving attorneys practical guidance before matters become urgent.
What our LPA Aftercare Service includes
Our annual aftercare package is intended to provide reassurance, structure and practical support.
It includes:
Annual review of your LPA arrangements
We check whether your attorneys, replacement attorneys, contact details and practical arrangements remain appropriate.
Attorney guidance
We help your attorneys understand their role, responsibilities and limits, including the importance of acting in the donor’s best interests and following the Mental Capacity Act principles.
Practical use guidance
We explain how the LPA is likely to be used with banks, care homes, GP surgeries, hospitals and other organisations.
Certified copy management
We can advise on certified copies and help you avoid sending original documents unnecessarily.
Safeguarding-focused review
We consider whether any changes in family circumstances, health, finances or care arrangements create increased risk.
Priority routine queries
You and your attorneys have priority access for routine LPA queries during the year.
Peace of mind
You know that your LPA has not simply been completed and forgotten. It remains part of an active protective plan.
A safeguarding service, not just document storage
Many LPA problems arise not because the document was badly drafted, but because no one reviews what happens afterwards.
Our aftercare service is designed to reduce the risk of:
financial confusion;
attorneys acting without understanding their duties;
family disputes escalating unnecessarily;
care providers or banks refusing to engage;
safeguarding concerns being missed;
out-of-date arrangements remaining in place for too long.
The aim is simple: to make sure the LPA still works for the real life it is meant to protect.
Who should consider LPA aftercare?
This service is particularly useful if:
you have appointed more than one attorney;
there may be family disagreement;
your attorneys have not acted before;
you have significant assets, property or business interests;
you are concerned about future care decisions;
you want your attorneys to understand their responsibilities properly;
you want annual reassurance that your arrangements remain suitable;
you are making LPAs as part of wider estate, care or later-life planning.

attorney guidance;
review of contact details and practical arrangements;

Sometimes the most difficult moment is when the LPA is first needed.

More complex disputes, safeguarding concerns, contested capacity issues, family conflict or urgent Court of Protection matters are charged separately at our usual hourly rates.
